Under Floor Heating
![]() |
Under floor heating is the most comfortable form of central heating. Ideally, your body should be warmer than your head and as under floor heating warms the lower part of the room first, losing approximately two degrees Celsius at two metres above the floor, it provides the ideal conditions for warmth and comfort. Water-based under floor heating is more efficient to run than radiators. There is a more efficient distribution of heat within the room, with less cold spots and possible losses due to the proximity of walls and windows. Also, a condensing boiler set to the relatively low temperature required for an under floor heating system, rather than the higher temperature needed for radiators, will have higher efficiency and lower standby losses. Solar panels are also ideal for powering under floor heating, and a back boiler in a wood burning stove can also be incorporated. There is also of course the advantage of not having radiators in the room, which can be conspicuous in a traditional Puglian building. The Mediterranean tradition for stone or tiled floors provides the ideal situation for under floor heating - carpets or other insulating floor coverings can negate its effect. In fact, it was the Romans that invented under floor heating. Another surprising benefit is of cleaner air as it reduces the airborne circulation of both dust and dust mites. If installed when refurbishing a building, water based underfloor heating can be a very cost effective solution. Otherwise electric underfloor heating can be more convenient in a localised installation. |
What our customers say...
"underfloor heating is a joy. The stone floors here are beautiful in their own right, and it's great to enjoy them fully in winter too. Apart from the obvious benefits such as no radiators in the house, the heat provided is more uniform across the room. It's very economical to run too - incorporating our solar panels and wood burning stove, we spent a maximum of 3 euros a day on gas last winter."
